STEM Saturdays – HEART DISSECTION

Today we got to the heart of the matter – Started by talking about what fuels the heart and why healthy choices matter. We stopped to feel our own heartbeat. We split into 2 groups (3-7) and (8-10) for age appropriate experiences. Students discovered that the heart is a muscle.

HEART – MUSCLE – BLOOD – PUMP – HEALTHY – VENTRICLE – ARTERY were the words of the day!

Students observed the outside of the heart (thick arteries, the thinner veins and the yellowish fat) and then made a cut to observe the inside of the heart
(empty spaces, the strong muscles, the the flaps that open and close)

STEM SATURDAY OVERVIEW

This fall, we launched STREAM Saturdays at The Light Preparatory Academy in Miami Gardens, engaging young innovators ages 3–10. Every second Saturday, FIU Medical School facilitators lead hands-on experiments—like bottle rockets—that spark curiosity and excitement for science. “R” for Reading and “A” for Art was added to the STEM learning to complement the Academy’s Montessori curriculum.

Our foundation’s investment in STEM Saturday honors Richard’s lifelong passion for science, first inspired by his elementary school principal, Dr. William Alexander, and pays it forward in our programming.
