STEM Saturdays – OWL PELLETS

EAGLES SOAR fueled some “OWL-SOME” hands-on experience, facilitated by FIU Med School Students during STREAM Saturday at The Light Preparatory Academy. Students first crafted their very own paper owls, then became young scientists as they dissected real owl pellets!>!> Yes, owls swallow their prey whole and cough up (split out) balls of bones and fur hours later.

Through careful observation and analysis, they discovered what owls eat by identifying bones, feathers, and tiny remains inside the pellets!!!!! THAT WAS A WOW! We discovered that owls do not chew their food.

STEM SATURDAY OVERVIEW

This fall, we launched STREAM Saturdays at The Light Preparatory Academy in Miami Gardens, engaging young innovators ages 3–10. Every second Saturday, FIU Medical School facilitators lead hands-on experiments—like bottle rockets—that spark curiosity and excitement for science. “R” for Reading and “A” for Art was added to the STEM learning to complement the Academy’s Montessori curriculum.

Our foundation’s investment in STEM Saturday honors Richard’s lifelong passion for science, first inspired by his elementary school principal, Dr. William Alexander, and pays it forward in our programming.
